Ambassador Tomas said that a political solution for Darfur should be a priority to everyone and be tackled without delay. The continued conflict affects the social fabric of the population and entails serious human rights violations and civilian torment, including air bombardments and violence against IDPs, women and children.

The Ambassadors of the EU called on all relevant Sudanese parties to fight impunity, improve access and reduce counter-productive travel restrictions for the international agencies, so that these can implement their humanitarian and development mandates. As a result of on-going instability and conflict, there have been new arrivals in and which add to the protracted plight of displaced population in this ten year old camp.

And, most important, they must commit their own troops to the UN mission. Only then may we begin to see an end to the ongoing atrocities in Darfur. This week on Hold Your Fire! Last year a Sudanese man from Darfur crossed the mile 50 km Channel Tunnel from France to Britain on foot, dodging high-speed trains in the dark, in an extreme example of the desperate measures some are prepared to take.

Life is good in Europe, whereas here we are not even human. Elders at the camps say the sense of injustice and loss of hope has led to drug abuse or violence. Each day some young men go to Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, to look for jobs as day laborers, wash dishes or polish shoes. But there are many jobless migrants and few jobs.
