Bi-Han made his debut as one of the few original characters in the first Mortal Kombat game as the original Sub-Zero , a mantle later passed down to his younger brother Kuai Liang after his death. After his death and resurrection as Noob Saibot, he has been a recurring antagonist in the franchise, usually siding with other characters on the side of evil in a bid to benefit himself.
He also serves as a major antagonist towards his younger brother and Scorpion in many instances. Before his death, Bi-Han was the original Sub-Zero, one of the most powerful and devout warriors of the Lin Kuei clan. While essentially neutral, he was a cold-blooded, vicious assassin whose soul had become corrupted from years of violence and remorseless killing.
At the end of the first Mortal Kombat tournament, Bi-Han was murdered by Scorpion in retaliation for his own death at the cryomancer's hands. He then descended to the fifth plane of the Netherrealm where he was resurrected by the sorcerer Quan Chi who had earlier resurrected Scorpion. The evil within his soul was released by stripping him of pride, compassion, and everything else that made him human.
Reborn in the Netherrealm , Noob Saibot is the very incarnation of evil. He desires not only to remain in the Netherrealm, but to conquer and rule it. Although he has been seen in the service of evil warlords such as Shinnok and Shao Kahn , his ultimate allegiance is to himself. When he was still the Cryomancer Sub-Zero, Bi-Han possessed incredible control over the element of ice. He was able to flash-freeze opponents with a single touch and had the ability to freeze the air in a large area around him by concentrating all of his power into one destructive blast.
His powers were similar, if not superior, to his younger brother's cryomancy. Like his brother, he could create ice weapons when taking the offensive swords, daggers, spikes, orbs, etc. His transformation to the wraith Noob Saibot did not immediately grant him new abilities; his first appearance in Mortal Kombat 2 had him borrow moves from other ninjas. It wouldn't be until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that Noob fully came into his own, harnessing the powers of darkness and shadow against his foes.
Noob displays a mastery over the powers of darkness and is able to turn invisible, create weapon constructs, and summon a shadow clone of himself to assist in battle. This allows him to overwhelm opponents who fight on their own. His clone was replaced by Cyber Smoke in Mortal Kombat: Deception , who had a similar role in combat but had his own set of powers and could summon Noob when needed.
In the latest installment, he can duplicate and teleport to his shadow clone for an advantage in numbers and mobility respectively. The clone can also be summoned inside live opponents to bypass external defenses by pouring dark energy into them, tearing them apart from the inside. Like most ninjas, Noob has the ability to teleport. In older games, his teleportation required the use of dark portals which he could also use on unlucky opponents who were caught in them. His usage of teleportation and portals was expanded on in Mortal Kombat and in Mortal Kombat He could turn into liquid and reform elsewhere, use portals to reposition himself or his opponent, and even kill by crushing and disintegrating those who are caught in his portal.
Noob honed his bunshin techniques as well; summoning multiple clones to restrain enemies. He used such techniques upon Jax and Jacqui when they returned to Shang Tsung's Island to retrieve the crown. His weapons of choice are shurikens.
He initially was to have these weapons, along with a scythe , in Mortal Kombat 4 , but was replaced with Reiko.
However, he begins using such weapons in Mortal Kombat: Deception. He also utilises a sickle as his main weapon in Mortal Kombat In his current form as a Wraith, Noob possesses a degree of immortality. This was demonstrated when he survived being thrown into the Soulnado by Cyber Sub-Zero. Noob was able to withstand the vortex and absorb the souls swirling around it, using them to fuel his power. In addition, the sickle he wields is lodged into his heart, but he appears to be unaffected as the weapon is frequently sheathed and unsheathed.
His relationship with Scorpion is all but ignored; Shang Tsung only remarks that they are the " deadliest of enemies, but slaves under my power. When the two prepared to fight the trio, they were incapacitated by Lord Raiden. Retrieving their transportation crystals, he was able to get to Quan Chi's fortress and confronted the deceiving sorcerer.
Quan Chi then revealed to Sub-Zero that the only reason he was able to retain his mortality in the Netherrealm was because of the evil in his heart from being the ruthless assassin he had been known as.
Sub-Zero fought the sorcerer; although he was the clear victor, Sareena suddenly appeared and helped Sub-Zero defeat her master. She then begged Sub-Zero to take her away from the Netherrealm, but she was quickly killed by Shinnok, who was now powered by his amulet unknown to the god, Quan Chi had actually given him a fake, keeping the real amulet for himself.
Using his cunning, Sub-Zero grabbed the amulet from Shinnok, who then morphed into a giant demon. It is unknown if Sub-Zero fought the demonic Shinnok; but in the end, Sub-Zero escaped through a portal created by Raiden, and delivered the amulet to the god. When Sub-Zero questioned what Quan Chi said to him, Raiden confirmed it, but reminded the warrior that only he could change his own fate. It was up to Sub-Zero to choose his destiny, but were he to die with his soul thus corrupted, he would descend to the Fifth Plane of the Netherrealm to face a terrible fate unknown even to Raiden.
Upon returning to the Lin Kuei headquarters, he learned that he had been invited to the Mortal Kombattournament by Shang Tsung himself. The Lin Kuei had previously been approached with a contract for the sorcerer's head.
Sub-Zero would accept the invitation, with his ultimate designs being set on assassinating Tsung. To this day, the particulars of Sub-Zero's fate during the tournament remain largely unknown. By Raiden's account, Scorpion had also participated in the tournament and swore to Sub-Zero that he would get his revenge.
Sometime after the defeats of Goro and Shang Tsung by the White Lotus monk Liu Kang, and the island's subsequent eruption into chaos, Scorpion confronted Sub-Zero at the island's gates and challenged him to a fight to the death. Fueled by vengeance and the demon energies of the Netherrealm, Scorpion burned Sub-Zero to death. True to what Raiden had predicted, Sub-Zero's soul descended deep into the Netherrealm's Fifth Plane, where he would become a demonic form of what he used to be.
He would be given the name of Noob Saibot. Saibot would become a member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow, the very thing he had resisted becoming whilst alive. In a darkly ironic twist, Saibot would now pledge allegiance and loyalty to Shinnok.
One of his first tasks for his new lord would be to observe and report on the events taking place on Earthrealm and Outworld; to this end, he remained in the shadows during the Outworld tournament, faithfully monitoring the situation for the fallen Elder God. It is unknown of his role in the battle.
Noob now served his overlord directly. But despite the Elder God's careful planning, Shinnok was once again defeated by Raiden's forces and the Brotherhood of the Shadow was disbanded. With Shinnok utterly defeated Saibot later refers to him as simply "gone" , Noob returned to the service of the still-weakened Shao Kahn.
A few years later, he appeared during a battle between the armies of Edenia and the Shokan led by Kitanaand Goro with the Outworld army led by Kano. He attacked an exhausted Goro, mortally wounding him. The war ground was then lead to a stalemate. With Kahn having been thought slain at the hands of the Deadly Alliance and Shinnok vanquished, Saibot slowly changed from a pawn into a player.
Free to pursue his own interests, and uninterested in the affairs concerning the rise of Onaga, he plotted to create his own legion of assassins. While searching Kahn's abandoned fortress, he discovered the inert body of Smoke. Reprogramming the cyborg to remain loyal to him, he reactivated his nanotechnology, and formed plans to create an army of cyber-demons, using Smoke as a template.
Their team was Noob-Smoke. Saibot and Smoke disappeared into the Netherrealm. Sub-Zero ventured after the two. However, Saibot and Smoke knew they were being followed and attacked Sub-Zero in the Netherrealm, and it was then that Saibot revealed to Sub-Zero that he was his older brother.
