But, it is important to communicate the importance of tithing and offering and why we do it. One of the single most awkward moments in a church service is when the offering time comes and no-one has taken the time to explain what to do… Do you reach for your wallet? Despite people not talking about it, the Bible actually has a lot to say about giving to the church and tithing. That way, next time you have to talk about tithing and offering you can feel more confident in delivering a clear example!
Sometimes the words tithing and offering are used synonymously, but they actually mean two completely different things. In context, this would mean that those who tithed would give one-tenth of their crop to God.
Today it can be hard to compare our income to that of a farmer in the Bible. But not everyone in the Bible was farming or managing livestock. Even those that made a regular wage were required to give one-tenth of it back to God. These gifts can still be accurate today and applicable by definition.
A synonym for this would be the word gift or gifting. Genesis , the idea of tithing is first brought up. In the Old Testament, tithing was the system set in place that supported the priest and the work that they were doing. At the core of tithing are many issues, but today I will only talk about three of them- trust, redemption and the storehouse church. First, God trusted us with what is His in the first place. This sacred portion is entrusted to us and we are to return it to Him.
The second thing that tithing teaches us is redemption. The tithe is the first tenth or the first fruit of our increase.
When God gave His Son to die on the cross for our sin He redeemed us from the curse of the law. When we give our tithe we are worshiping God and recognizing His redemption. Many people believe that we should not follow the practice of tithing any longer because it was an Old Testament law but I say they law was given to help us see our need for redemption and every time we tithe we honor and recognize our need for God and the amazing way that He has blessed us and provided for us.
I think that many use the gospel of grace to free themselves from obedience instead of discovering that the grace of God enables us to follow Him more passionately. The last thing I would mention about tithing is that the tithe was brought to the priest or the storehouse.
Today this would mean bringing the tithe to the local church. Just as they brought the tithe to the storehouse in the Old Testament, we bring the tithe to our local church in the New Testament. God in turn uses this tithe to further His kingdom including meeting the needs of Church leaders, providing for ministry space and sending missionaries to the ends of the earth!
Because of the principles and not the laws, I believe God still desires to be worshiped and honored through the tithe today. English US. English UK. Question about English US. What is the difference between give and offer? Feel free to just provide example sentences. Report copyright infringement.
