I might blog about it at some later time but I doubt I could do it as well as Feynman did so maybe you just read the book if you want to know Anyhow, I researched some more and finally unearthed the answer. As you may or may not have heard, electromagnetism is mediated by photons. These are light particles, by which I mean the actual stuff that light is made of, not that they are not very heavy though as it happens they are not very heavy! Any charged particle emits and absorbs photons as it goes about its daily life.
Again, I used to wonder why they did that. How it does that is what determines whether the charge is positive or negative. They are just little packets of energy flitting from one charged particle to the next.
Special relativity deserves a whole chapter all to itself. That said…. He went on to work out that both space and time look different depending on how you are moving. To a person in the building the opposite happens — I look squashed as I move past them. There are many excellent texts that explain this beautifully.
Personally I recommend The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, which explains much, much more than just relativity but does it all with such clarity I never tire of rereading it. I have a wire with no current moving down it.
Nearby I have an electron. Then I turn on the current and the electrons in the wire start moving along it. It gets interesting because from the point of view of the electron, the moving electrons in the wire now look closer together due to special relativity, meaning the wire appears to have a net negative charge and this pushes the electron away through electrical repulsion.
There it is! The rest all stems from there. However, there are trillions of them in the wire so when you add the forces up overall some effect can still be felt at the human scale. This is why only certain metals such as iron can become magnets. If you really want one, I suggest you look them up. This is the reason behind my comment. If you look at my posts you will see I as well as Satur9 are among the many users on here that have helped countless people with their questions.
There is no one resource for magnet information. My intent is not to be patronizing, but to point out that a simple google search will get you more information about magnet coatings than you will get if everyone on this board answered your question. No ill will was intended. I would also like to clarify that I wasnt trying to imply that if Satur9 didnt give any recommendations that any trouble I get into would be on Satur9, I am responsible for my own actions, I am responsible for what I do to my body, I intend to take that responsibility as is the essence of biohacking isnt it?
