How do beowulfs men react to the dragon

Wiglaf fills his arms with gold and treasure and takes the standard, too. He hurries back to Beowulf, hoping that the king is still alive.

Beowulf is alive but bleeding profusely. Wiglaf begins to clean the king's wounds again as Beowulf gazes on the treasure. Beowulf thanks God for his last glance of the treasure and the fact that he is going to die " well endowed " with gold. He's traded his life for this golden hoard.

Beowulf orders Wiglaf to build a barrow for him on the coast after his body has been burned on a funeral pyre. This barrow will be visible to ships and remind people of Beowulf's great deeds. Beowulf takes off his golden collar and gives it to Wiglaf, calling him " the last of the Waegmundings ," the last member of his clan now that Beowulf is dying.

Beowulf dies. Wiglaf watches Beowulf's death-agonies. Beside them, the dragon lies dead. Ten of the Geat warriors—the ones who abandoned Beowulf and Wiglaf earlier—creep back to the scene of the battle. Silently, they watch Wiglaf try to revive Beowulf with water, but the king is dead.

Wiglaf angrily reprimands the other Geats for abandoning Beowulf, their generous and loyal king, in his hour of need. Wiglaf foresees that, with Beowulf dead and his warriors disgraced, the Geats will be attacked by their neighbors and their entire nation will be destroyed. Wiglaf orders that a messenger go to the rest of Beowulf's men, who are camped on the ridge, to tell them what has happened.

The messenger tells the people that Beowulf has been destroyed by the dragon, but has managed to kill it before he died.

Like Wiglaf, the messenger predicts that, with Beowulf gone, the Geats will be attacked by their neighbors, the Franks and the Frisians. The sword is ineffective considering it snaps when Beowulf is attempting to use it on the dragon. Describe how Beowulf and Wiglaf join forces to slay the dragon.

Wiglaf ignored the upper half of the body and instead stabbed the dragon below. However, Beowulf also stabbed the dragon with a knife that he carried in his harness.

Beowulf wishes for two things, the first being to give his battle garments to his own son. Second, he asked Wiglaf to show him the treasures obtained by the dragon such as drinking cups and battle armour. How does Beowulf react when he sees the treasure? He is thrilled and overly thankful to God.

What are his funeral instructions? Build him a tomb after fire on the land by the sea so that there is a reminder of him to his people. Also, so that ocean travelers will later name it after the warriors as their ships travel through over the sea. What does Wiglaf say to them? The weak men return from the woods, now acting as if they will be of assistance.

Wiglaf says that too few of them returned to defend the king, Beowulf, thus he calls them a disgrace. He also says that, the receiving of treasures shall disappear, along with kingsman becoming wanderers when word of the flee becomes known.

Attacks of war from enemies, such as the Frisians, the Swedish and the Franks now that Beowulf will no longer be able to protect them and the others know they are vulnerable. Wiglaf decrees that all the treasure should be burned. What is his reason for this?

He believes that no man is worthy of the treasure other than Beowulf, instead it should all be burned instead of granting someone with something they are unworthy of. The funeral pyre was just as Beowulf had wished, there were shiny metal coats, shields and helmets all hung upon the pyre.

On top of the mound, the men then constructed a huge fire that black wood-smoke arose from. Finally, they build a large memorial for the fallen leader.

In addition, they are to protect what is inside of the tomb such as torques and jewels. Hrothgar proclaims that from now on he shall love Beowulf as a son. Why are they permitted at the victory feast? Hrethric was his elder son and Hrothmund was younger What gifts does Welthrow give to Beowulf at the feast? She gives Beowulf a necklace and she tells him to protect them. Aeschere What individuals had witnessed the two friends prior to the time of the attacks on herot?

Hrothgar Describe the location of the place where Grendel lived with his mother It was placed in a swamp that was underground According to Beowulf- What is the only thing that survives death?

This poetic evocation of death as constituting movement from one realm to another—from the earthly realm to the spiritual one—reveals the influence of Christian ideology on the generally pagan Beowulf.

That Beowulf should be so adamant in his desire to see the treasure before he dies has puzzled many readers. It is important to remember that treasure objects often function as symbols of the transmission of values through generations or of bonds of kinship and loyalty. Beowulf recognizes this symbolic function when he reflects that he would pass on his armor to his own son if he had one. His relief upon seeing the treasure demonstrates his desire to leave something to his people—a sort of surrogate offspring—when he dies.

He knows that, even though he has slain the dragon, his victory will feel hollow if there is no subsequent enactment of the ritual of reward and gift-giving. That the treasure that Wiglaf finds is rusty and corroded, however, adds a pathetic, ironic quality to the scene. Furthermore, these riches will be entombed with Beowulf, so that the treasure will be hoarded, in effect, rather than redistributed, as the heroic code normally demands.

In a way, Beowulf is like the original burier of the treasure, who realized that he was the last of his line—he knows that his lineage will not continue. The story has now come full circle. In a world where small societies are constantly at war over land, wealth, resources, and honor, the presence of a powerful king is essential to the safety and well-being of a people.

When a king dies, his people become vulnerable to the marauding forces beyond their borders. Wiglaf suggests as well that the weakness and deficiency of his fellow warriors will encourage invaders.

The Geats have sacrificed their reputation as valiant warriors by refusing to come to the aid of their king, and reputation is itself an important layer of defense. Once word of their cowardice gets out, they will surely become targets of attack.
