For anyone who has a special devotion to the Blessed Mother like me it would be hurtful. I think you would risk offending a fair number of people if you were wearing them that way in public. Good to know. I asked my Catholic husband, who went to Catholic school through 8th grade, and served as an altar boy, if it was a bad thing to do and he said no.
Every time I ask him a question having to do with the Catholic religion his answer is "I don't know. Just a necklace with a cross. I'm Jewish, so I don't have a clue, but wondered what made a string of beads a rosary and not just a string of beads.
This picture seems to explain the pattern and meaning of each part, assuming it's correct. Posted By: jasperbut wondered what made a string of beads a rosary and not just a string of beads Exactly, jasper.
That's why I asked if they were blessed. I am aware that there is a significance to the patterns of the beads and meaning to each bead. I think it could be very offensive to some, not to others. IMO do what you are comfortable with, you will always offend someone.
Growing up Catholic, I can't imagine wearing a rosary. I wouldn't be offended, but that's me. I agree with Scarlet and others, should not be worn as a necklace, kind of tacky and offensive. My spouse was also an alter boy, Catholic school kid, was clueless too when I asked him. I am a Catholic, but would never wear a rosary for jewelry. I love it and can see why you do too! Do you ever wear a cross as jewelry? If so, then I'd say it's OK to re-string the piece so it doesn't look like a rosary, although the combination of beads and a crucifix will probably always make other people think of rosaries.
Then no one could possibly take offense. I do think it would be distinctly odd to wear it as it is now, and would offend any really serious Catholics. We were basically poor yet I felt so rich with my treasure.
It was blessed by our parish priest. I love what it gives me religiously. I am happy to say that to say the rosary is one of the most sacred things I can do. I would bring mine with me to my girlfriend's house and on a sleepover night, her mother, she and I would say it together. I know this isn't what you were talking about but I certainly would not be offended if you chose to wear it.
It may only be aesthetically beautiful to you but if I saw it on you it would evoke wonderful memories and I could only have the sweetest smile on my face. Posted By: meandtheboysWhat makes it "sacred? Most rosaries are indeed blessed and should not be worn as a fashion statement. Those which are not blessed are still considered as worthy of reverence because the beads and their arrangement have a very special significance.
The rosary in the Catholic Church is most closely associated with Mary, the Blessed Mother whose significance and stature is far greater to Catholics than among most other Christian sects. Small children sometimes wear them out of fascination; mine were given the explanation of their significance by my mother and gently asked not to wear them she was a devoted rosarian. It may seem a minor thing to non-catholics, but wearing the rosary would be offensive even if nobody said so aloud.
Just as it might offend Jewish people if gentiles took to wearing a tallit or yarmulke with no regard for their religious significance.
I am not offended at all. Most Rosaries are very pretty , even when simple and plain I'm dyed in the wool RC. Eventually, a similar system was created with fewer beads for laypeople to also keep track of their prayers, with the gradual addition of prayers and mysteries appearing. It creatively combines the divine and the human, Christ and Mary, spirit and body, communion and institution, person and community, faith and homeland, intelligence and emotion.
Some wonder why they are not allowed to wear one as a necklace as well. If we are to wear a rosary, we should be attentive to why we do so in the first place: as a sacramental and a blessed gift from Our Lady, the rosary should be revered. But if we don a rosary without genuine piety or purpose, we are not only disrespecting the prayer itself, we are also sending the wrong message that it is OK to do so.
Contemplate your motivation for wearing a rosary. Is it to get attention? Are you wearing it with no intention of actually praying the rosary or as an ornamental expression of your faith? If the answer to either of these is yes, you are wearing the rosary for the wrong reasons.
Some people and religious orders have a special devotion to praying and meditating on the rosary. Because of this, some religious habits include wearing a rosary, often as a cincture. In particular cases, some laypeople may have a specific devotion to the rosary and wear it so that they constantly have it on hand. The reason for wearing any religious habit is outwardly expressing an interior relationship to God, not to make a statement or appear a certain way to the world.
